Children and Meditation

By

Katherine Siswick-Clark

Meditation is a wonderful aid for children as well as adults and although linked with spiritualism, it is not related to any religious guidelines.  Meditation can be beneficial to children on a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level.

The physical

On a physical level meditation can help children learn the art of relaxing, enabling their bodies to fully let go of any tension which unbeknown to them they may be holding on to.  By focusing and connecting with their bodies children can access their own inner world where they can find stillness, comfort and joy.  They can begin to understand their bodies on a deeper level and this in turn can help children to respect their bodies and appreciate the extent of their own abilities. Through having a greater understanding of how their bodies feel our children begin to know themselves in an entirely new way enabling them to detect any imbalances which they can then learn to correct.

The Emotional

When experiencing challenging and stressful situations, like for instance, examinations, bullying or changes in their environment, meditation can be a wonderful tool for children as meditation allows them to let go of worries, fears and anxieties enabling them access their own inner resources, to find sanctuary, strength and guidance. By connecting more with their inner realities children are able to understand their true feelings and find solutions or release that which no longer serves them. Meditation can be very empowering and give a huge boast to a persons self esteem.

The Mental

Meditation brings stillness, peace and calm to the mind.  Children have a wonderful ability to stay present in everyday life and they can learn to maintain this state through meditative practice. Being able to take time out from the mental chatter and negative thinking we all have gives them the much needed opportunity to find some perspective and perhaps some more constructive ways of thinking and being.  Meditation helps children to focus their minds which enhances their learning experience and ability. Also children have wonderful imaginations and through meditation they can really use and explore their creativity.  They can take themselves off to magical places, go on adventures, they can see themselves achieving their goals and even prepare for events to come.  So much fun can be had with meditation for when your in that state for when you are in that relax and wonderful state your senses are alive and you can really embrace any and every experience, there are no limitations except those you impose through your thinking and children’s minds are so open and alive with creativity that anything really is possible.

The Spiritual

On a spiritual level meditation allows children to connect with who they really are, to find their truth and purpose, the meaning in their lives  and experience.  They can connect with who ever they believe in, be it God, Angels, Spirit Guides, Power Animals, Elementals, Ascended Masters, departed loved ones or someone or something entirely different.  This connection can be tremendously uplifting and inspiring and feelings of isolation, separation and loneliness are forgotten.

Meditation has been documented to promote compassion and positive relationships and it has even been shown to enhance anger management skills.  Children who do meditate have reported that meditation is fun and it helps them feel good in themselves and about themselves and their environment in fact research shows that children can only benefit from learning and practicing meditation.
